Discovering the Thrill of Democracy: A Conversation with Frances Moore Lappé and Bill Twist
The global Pachamama Alliance community came together with Co-founder Bill Twist and author and activist Frances Moore Lappé on a conference call on February 6, 2019, to discuss the thrill of democracy, a phrase that Frances uses in her work around "living democracy."
They spoke about the importance of a government that truly represents the will of the people in order to fulfill on the vision of Pachamama Alliance—an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, socially just human presence on this planet—and discussed the idea of dignity as the essence of effective democracy.
Bill mentioned a recent political success story from longtime Pachamama Alliance partner Van Jones, who partnered with unexpected allies to achieve landmark criminal justice reform, as an example of how diverse political perspectives can come together around supporting human dignity.
Frances posed a question to the listeners about examples of groups that offer deep listening opportunities to people with different perspectives, not to solve problems, but to truly hear each other and ask questions. Community member Bob Warner mentioned Living Room Conversations, and June Holte offered a rich list of resources that she was kind enough to share by email after the call:
- State of American Democracy
- Everyday Democracy
- Utne Reader Salons
- Co-Intelligence Institute
- Center for Partnership Studies
- New Economy Working Group
- Government by the People
