1 year ago PublicThank you, Everyone, who participated in the Earth Month Eco-challenge! Our team, Green Jersey, had 18 participants and we ended the challenge in the top 10% of 565 teams -- and in first place in NJ, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Marty and I both finished in the top 20 of the over 8,200 people participating! What did we win? A whole lot of new knowledge, increased personal commitment to making a difference and optimism that together we can create a beautiful future for each other and our planet home.

Please join the Delaware River Valley Community, NJ Tri-County Sustainability and SustainabilityNow for a free online screening of "The Sacrifice Zone — An Industrial Wasteland." Sacrifice zones are often “fenceline communities” of low-income and people of color, or “hot spots” of chemical pollution where residents live immediately adjacent to heavily polluted industries or military bases. Quite often, this pattern of unequal protection constitutes environmental racism.
Time: Feb 18, 2021 07:00 PM Eastern (US and Canada).
Click here to register: http://bit.ly/Sacrifice-ZoneThe Ironbound district of Newark, New Jersey, is one of the most toxic neighborhoods in the country. Maria Lopez-Nuñez, a Honduran-American resident there, is waging a war for environmental justice. She is part of the Ironbound Community Corporation, one of the most effective environmental justice organizations in the country. The Sacrifice Zone follows Maria as she leads a group of environmental justice fighters determined to break the cycle of poor communities of color serving as dumping grounds for our consumer society.
After the film, we'll be discussing the groundbreaking environmental justice legislation recently passed in New Jersey that requires the cumulative environmental and public health impact of all facilities in any community before granting permits for new industrial or waste facilities.
We'll also focus on how citizen support helped to get this law passed, how you can use it as a blueprint for legislation in other states and what local organizers can do now that it exists.
